Soviet kitsch fashion model with scythe, undated
“A young woman models in a studio for photographer Fitz W. Guerin. No date is recorded with the photo, but it was probably taken around 1902.”
Two reapers in the space of an hour. The Soviet kitsch fashion shot is another random interjection from Flickr via FFFFOUND — whose given title is too oafish to reiterate, and which substitutes a scythe for the sickle — and the young lady with the sickle, whose title is The Reaper, is a recent offering from Shorpy, but which substitutes a sickle for the scythe. Eh.
I didn’t have anything further to add, just remarking their coincidence, their borrowing of each others’ symbols of office, and wondering to what extent the scythe and the sickle are interchangeable as symbols, and to what not.
NOTE: Crikey. The layout of this post is a little unstable. I’ve messed about with it in draft form, and I expect I’ll be tinkering yet still further.
