Ruby Short and his Dragsters – Hot Rodders Battle Rock and Roll
WFMU’s 365 day Project this year has mostly offered tracks that were too desperately strange to promise much enduring appeal, to me at any rate. But I had to download this. Essentially rather weedy sub-surf mid-sixties rock’n'roll, liberally sprinkled with internal combustion sound clips. I’m only about three or four tracks into this, and so far there hasn’t been any particular track that stood out, but I imagine there’s a proportion of the readership around here who will go for the concept in a pretty general way.
The picture is a detail from the front cover, and serious scholars of the history of camp — and I’m sure there must be a few out there — will be able to advise whether an image like this would have had quite the connotations in 1964 that it does today?
