It’s now three years since we lost him. To commemorate, here’s a run-down of some of the blogs inspired by John Peel’s singular example, in no particular order.
- Kat’s Karavan
- Recently awakened from a few months’ hiatus. This is one of the better and more generous of the Peelblogs, and also the primary source of linkage for the rest of this list.
- Fades In Slowly
- Desultory postings of Peel sessions and Festive 50s, sprinkled with accounts of vintage Liverpool FC adventures. Recentish highlight: video clip of Peel talking about punk.
- In Session Tonight
- Intending to post every Peel session they can get hold of, in alphabetical order. They’re up to Ae-, so you can get the Adverts sessions. I can think of better ways to approach this, but one cannot help but admire their ambition. Mind you, there’s been no updates since August, perhaps fatigue has set in already…
- John Peel Every Day
- Going strong during the summer when I first drafted this post, presently afflicted, by the sound of it, with the old black dog. Enthusiasm sends best wishes, hopes for a speedy recovery.
- The Perfumed Garden
- More sessions, but also slowed down in recent months, nothing since August. The archives, however, contain much valuable treasure.
- Teenage Kicks
- Reviews (with mp3s) of individual tracks with strong associations to the Peel show. Good concept, and excellent track selection – Galaxie 500, Butthole Surfers, Squarepusher, Desperate Bicycles – let down a bit by indifferent writing.
- Right place, right time, wrong speed
- Not a blog, but a haphazard collection of archived recordings, and a link list of kindred spirits.
- The Yank Sizzler
- An irregular music compilation blog, inspired by Peel rather than merely devoted to the memory. Some of the recent installments of the Sizzler look very tasty, judging from the track lists.
- Dandelion Radio
- Dandelion extends Peel’s eclectic musical appetite into web radio. They even have a Festive 50, which is currently polling listener’s favourite tracks of the year.
- BBC John Peel minisite
- Official, and much improved since I last visited. All of the Peel sessions are now listed, many with audio, albeit in the loathsome and fairly useless RealAudio format. I also discover here that Radio 1 commemorates John Peel Day on the anniversary of his last live broadcast, on October 11th.
- Unpredictable Porridge
- A weird one. Ostensibly an unsigned musicians’ audition site, in which William Ravenscroft (JP’s son) and Universal Music are implicated. There are five brief reviews from Ravenscroft, which appear to have been posted in July, and nothing since. There is also a forum section, which is intended to function as a kind of musicians’ classified ads section, which at the time of this writing is entirely empty; not a single post, in any category. Perhaps the rather nebulous claims of ownership in the first paragraphs of the terms and conditions have something to do with that. This site is not expected to enjoy a long and happy life. Not around here, anyway.
Finally, photographer and Peel fan Martyn Baldock would like to hear from you if you have cassette mix tapes of Peel shows, sessions and so forth. His appeal seems to have been posted back in March, but I doubt that it’s too late…
