only a paper moon

Adam “Ape Lad” Koford alerts us to
Sailor and sweetheart, paper moon double portraitonly a paper moon
, a haunting collection of century-old studio photos employing the classic paper moon prop. As Adam points out, there’s some excellent faces among these pictures — mostly on the subjects, but occasionally on the props, too.

The set also had me rummaging the old hard drives for an image (below) I picked out from the Wonderland of Knowledge — where would this blog be without that book? — years and years ago. It’s the lead illustration for, of all things, a chapter on astronomy.

I remain convinced that this image will come in for something, one day, eventually.

This illustration from a chapter in The Wonderland of Knowledge looks strikingly similar to the Neverland Valley Ranch logo. It’s almost exactly the same image. Michael Jackson’s Neverland logo was created around 1988. About 6 years later Steven Spielberg commissioned a similar logo for his new movie studio, Dreamworks SKG. Both feature a boy sitting on a crescent moon.

  2. I am the artist that Michael Jackson commissioned for his “Boy In Crescent Moon” logo. He had me paint it, per his concept, for use as the design on his personal stationary, but later used it for many purposes around Neverland Ranch. The complete painting depicted the boy and moon in a twilight sky, high over a beautiful landscape. Michael purchased the original, and owned a portrait of himself that I was also commissioned to paint. Coincidentally, I also had a hand in the early design art for the Dreamworks logo, which, at that stage, had a fisherman sitting in the moon.

Hello. My name is Lisa and I saw the ebay listing of a metal railroad logo sign that you created the image as indicated above in your comment. I wanted to know if you painted that beautiful image on the side of a wooden booth on stilts near where the train station was in Neverland. I also saw that logo all over in the Neverland Valley photos I aquired on the internet. I read that Michael Jackson used the logo on his soap, watches, a soda cooler, playing cards, glasses napkins, stickers and notebooks. I am interested in any stories you have about paintings if you did any inside the Neverland Valley Ranch/theme park. I saw wooden signs, a painted carraige covering tent, logo is painted on many of the rides and control boxes. I also wanted to know if I wanted to aquire a copy of one of the designs at Neverland do you know where I can get the information? Your original is beautiful and I also wanted to know if you ever did your drawing in color or just black and white sketch? Do you sell copies of your design? Ok.. I am sorry for rambling on I just find it facinating that I have learned a bit of history with my interest in this image. Please reply to LisaTheFoxx@aol.com I would love to hear from someone as talented as you!
