Cheiro was born William John Warner on November 1st, 1866 in Dublin. He became one of the most celebrated and courted of the fin-de-siecle occultists, palmist to the stars. I’ve been all over my copy of this book numerous times over the twenty odd years since I picked it up, but I’ve not been able to establish when Language of the Hand was originally published, but he date given in Wikipedia is certainly incorrect; my copy is the tenth edition, dated 1897, and contains a preface which refers to the fourth edition and is dated November 1985.
Twain was skeptical of palmistry, as he was about many things, but wrote nevertheless in Cheiro’s autograph book:
“Cheiro has exposed my character to me with humiliating accuracy. I ought not to confess this accuracy, still I am moved to do so.”
The “humiliating” exposure of Twain’s character is unfortunately not included in the book…
