For a brief time, right at the beginning of the 1970s, Kraftwerk consisted of Ralf Hutter, Florian Schneider, Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother. The latter two, as every Krautrock fan learned at mother’s, or possibly grandmother’s knee, departed to become Neu! and to this day, no material by this line-up has ever come to light. Not officially, anyway. The Kraftwerk boys, sticklers for staying in character, are not that favourably disposed towards even their first two albums, so they’re never likely to sit still for an official release of, say for example, the session at Gondel Kino, Bremen, Germany, June 25, 1971. Even a nice fat soundboard recording.
Now don’t be expecting any motorik, here. If anything, there is rather more of what would become the Neu! sound in evidence, than what would become Kraftwerk. Back in those days, Kraftwerk employed mostly conventional instruments (guitar, drums, organ and woodwind) and played music you would have to characterise as prog/experimental, head-banging tendency. If you know Kraftwerk #1, or the early Neu! albums, you’ll have some idea what to expect.
